“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in Him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:4)
Jesus tell us in His word to abide in Him. What does it mean to abide? It means to dwell; “to take up residence, to live.” The Amplified Bible says it this way, “to live in Me, and I will live in you.” The abiding comes through being vitally united or connected to the vine, Jesus who is our source of life.” Acts 17:28 says “for in Him we live and move and have our being.” How then do we obtain this state of abiding? It come through daily fellowship with Him through prayer and the word of God.
This might sound funny to some but I am just now coming to a real understanding of the importance of daily time with the Lord. When I am with Him, in His presence, I receive spiritual strength for the day. It prepares me for whatever the day might bring. It is just as important as feeding my physical body. Everyday, two to three times a day I feed my body so that I can have the energy I need from the food to accomplish my everyday tasks. If I have no energy, I usually don’t get much or nothing at all accomplished. If I don’t feed my spirit through daily fellowship with the Father I don’t have the spiritual energy needed to accomplish His will for my life.
When we neglect our daily time of prayer and the word with Him we cut ourselves off from the life giving source needed for our spiritual growth and we become unable to help ourselves, our families or anyone else. We can produce no fruit for the kingdom of God. Jesus said “as the branch can not bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.“( v4) Have you ever in your spiritual life with God found yourself no longer walking with Him? Feeling dry in your spirit, couldn’t and didn’t have a desire to pray or read the word? You were just going through the motion. You still went to church, still paid tithes still serving, set in church while the preaching was going on but unable to connect or focus your mind to it because your thoughts were on other things? It’s almost like you became numb to the things of God. What happened to get you to that place? You disconnected from the vine, your life source. Oh it came on very subtle, a little at a time. One day you had to get up early for an appointment, then the next day something else came up and then something else and before you knew it you were no longer spending time in God’s presence and the sad part is you didn’t desire to. You began to notice that you had no desire for anything you use to do for God, you no longer are producing fruit, your fruit dried up and was no good.
Jesus said “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me and I in Him, will bear much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” (v4) If we are to produce anything of value for God we have to reconnect to Him through prayer and the word of God. If you want your life back, if you want your joy back, (“In the presence of the Lord is fullness of joy.” Psalm 16:11) If you want to begin again to bear fruit for the kingdom then repent of neglecting your time with Him and move forward.
It is God’s will that our lives bring Him glory through bearing fruit. (John 15:8) Let us determine that this year we will see the promises of God in our lives and that of our families. God has great things ahead for us all but we must stay close to Him. GO AND BEAR MUCH FRUIT FOR THE KINGDOM!!!!!
